Boiler Water Treatment Services

Steam and heating chemistry that protects your boiler and equipment

Boiler water treatment protects your boiler and equipment from scale and corrosion, which can damage a system very quickly. Prime Boiler’s Water Treatment Division builds and services boiler water treatment programs for steam and hot water systems across Western Canada, using our own chemical blends, regular site testing and operator training to extend the life of your boiler.

Industrial Boiler Water Treatment

Steam and heating is our focus. Many chemical companies also handle wastewater and process chemicals. Prime focuses on industrial boiler water treatment for steam boilers, hot water (hydronic) boilers and the systems around them. Our industrial water treatment services start with a site visit to learn your boiler, your water and how you run. Our water treatment team works out of Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Port Coquitlam.

Water changes from site to site. Hard, soft and well water all behave differently, and BC water is different from Alberta or Saskatchewan water. That’s why Prime makes its own proprietary chemical blends and can build a custom blend for your system and industry. Most of our products are approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for use in food facilities. Prime supplies and supports complete industrial water treatment systems, including:

  • Scale and corrosion inhibitors
  • Condensate treatments
  • Descaling services
  • Glycols and thermal oils for heat transfer systems
  • Water softeners, reverse osmosis (RO) systems and filtration
  • Dosing pumps, tanks, injection quills and testing supplies

We Service All Brands Including:

Steam Boiler Water Treatment

A steam boiler should make clean steam and leave minerals behind in the boiler water. Without treatment, those minerals build up as scale, which cuts heat transfer and, left too long in more sensitive boilers, can cause thermal cracking and tube failure. Too many minerals also make the water foam and carry over with the steam, causing steam hammer. Prime uses scale inhibitors, oxygen scavengers that stop oxygen pitting, condensate treatment and blends for high-pressure boilers above 500 PSI. We test at four or five sample points, including the condensate, where poor-quality steam shows up.

Closed Loop Water Treatment

Closed loop systems recirculate the same water or glycol to heat a building, such as hot water boilers that pump water at about 80°C through radiant heating. Whether the loop runs on water or glycol, it needs a corrosion inhibitor. Prime’s closed loop treatments, including Molyhib-C (not used in BC) and Nitrihib, protect steel and yellow metals such as copper and brass. Warning signs include fouled filters, poor heat transfer, zones with no heat, and dirty, discoloured or smelly fluid. Prime recommends testing every closed loop heating system at least once a year.

Cooling Tower Water Treatment

Many facilities would rather work with one chemical company for every system on site. For customers who also run cooling towers, Prime can add cooling tower treatment to their program, including treatment chemicals and biocide for bacterial control, alongside the boiler and industrial water treatment systems we already look after.

Glycol and Heat Transfer System Treatment

Glycol systems carry heat through a closed loop and, like water loops, need a corrosion inhibitor. Some systems run on uninhibited glycol. Prime supplies fully inhibited ethylene and propylene glycol in any concentration, with volume discounts on 24 pails, 4 drums or 2 totes, plus thermal oils for heat transfer systems. Every Prime location has a glycol testing kit, so we can test your glycol at no charge and recommend next steps, including system cleaning and flushing.

Boiler Water Treatment Programs and Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is the core of what we do. A boiler water treatment program includes the right chemicals, setup, operator training and regular site visits. Prime recommends monthly visits, and you can choose bi-weekly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual instead. On each visit we test your system waters, check chemical levels and dosing, record key temperatures and boiler pressure, track your chemical stock and leave a report. Water treatment can be added to your Prime boiler maintenance program.

Benefits of Proper Boiler Water Treatment

When the chemistry is doing its job and operators are doing theirs, failure risks are minimal. Proper boiler water treatment services mean fewer unplanned shutdowns, fuel savings from clean heat transfer surfaces and a longer life for your boiler and equipment. They also help you avoid the big costs of scale and corrosion, such as re-tubing a boiler. And with service, parts, rentals, engineering and bulk water under one roof, Prime can be your one-stop shop for the boiler room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Boiler water treatment uses scale inhibitors to stop mineral deposits, oxygen scavengers such as sulfites that react with dissolved oxygen, condensate treatments such as neutralizing amines that stop return lines from turning acidic, and alkalinity boosters. Prime uses its own blends and picks the mix for your water and system.

For boilers, Prime groups water treatment into four main types: scale control, oxygen control, condensate treatment and alkalinity control. Most boiler water treatment systems combine more than one, and Prime also offers multi-use products that cover several needs in one treatment.

Total dissolved solids (TDS) build up in boiler water as steam leaves the boiler, and too many cause foaming and carryover. Regular blowdowns keep TDS under control, and Prime tests your boiler water on every visit. Ask our team about the right limit for your boiler.

Most treatment chemicals go into the feed water, where they mix before being pumped into the boiler. Prime supplies the dosing pumps, tanks and injection quills for boiler water treatment systems, and checks dosing on every visit. Some blends come as an all-in-one pail that hooks straight onto the system.

Your operators should test daily, and Prime trains them how. Prime recommends monthly visits to check the results and adjust the program, because testing without adjusting does nothing. Closed loop heating systems should be tested at least once a year.

Hydrochloric acid removes scale but gives off hazardous fumes, and the building often has to be cleared. Prime uses a food-grade, biodegradable synthetic acid instead. It isn’t regulated for transport and dissolves about half a kilogram of scale per litre of concentrate.

Yes. Customers who aren’t on a program call Prime for one-time industrial water treatment services, such as remote water testing and deposit analysis, descaling, new boiler services, and layup procedures for long-term shutdowns.
